The transformation of Turkey

I would like to see Turkey as a memberstate of EU, but there are huge
problems. For example, the oppression of Kurds must end, and this
development is only in it´s first stages - they can´t be compared to the
situation of minorities in the European Union; Basques have large autonomy,
Ireland will probably be united in the lifetime of the current political
leadership of Northern Ireland parties and the persecuted gypsies of
Eastern Europe haven´t been treated nearly as badly as the Kurds, of
whom tens of thousands have died since the fighting between Turkey and
PKK began in 1984.

Economically Turkey is indeed a "devoloped nation", but in reality this
is not the whole truth: Some parts of the country have relatively high
standard of living, whereas some are really part of the third world. Of
course, same goes for Italy; Northern Italy is one of the richest places
in the EU, but Southern Italy is - according to many critics - in reality
economically at the same level with North African countries.
