OMAR NAYEF ZAYED, KILLED IN PALESTINE'S EMBASSY IN BULGARIA IN FEBRUARY, BURIED TODAY

Hundreds of people were present as Omar Nayef Zayed was buried today in Sofia, Bulgaria 105 days after he was found dying in the premises of Palestine's embassy on February 26th. Zayed, born in 1963, was a member of the left-wing PFLP, which was represented by the legendary freedom fighter Leila Khaled.

A former political prisoner living in Bulgaria since 1994, Zayed had taken refuge in the embassy in December 2015 after Israel demanded his extradition and Bulgaria co-operated with the demand, which was against the Oslo Accords.

There is every indication that Zayed was assassinated and that there is an ongoing cover-up. Early reports said that Zayed had been beaten and possibly shot, but soon authorities were changing the story while offering little proof for their claims.

Bulgaria denied Palestinian authorities and Zayed's family access to the results of his autopsy, and Israel tried to claim his body.

Bulgaria, whose Prime Minister Boyko Borissov (a member of Communist-era security services) had arrived back from Israel only a day before Zayed died, has claimed that his death was either accidental or suicidal - he would have supposedly jumped or fallen from a roof. His brother said that in the evening before his death Zayed had called him and had sounded normal in the phone.

There were no Bulgarian police or Palestinian guards present at the embassy on that night. Although there was a bomb attack against Israeli tourists in the town of Burgas in 2012, Bulgaria's government claimed that the security situation in Sofia was safe and had pulled out security from embassies.

Palestinian Authority set up a committee to study Zayed's death, but both Zayed's family and PFLP have criticized it and claimed that it has no interest in finding out what really happened. Some have gone as far as to claim PA collusion with Zayed's death.

Omar Zayed had claimed to his family that the Palestinian ambassador had told him that "Israel has has keys to the embassy" and that he had been pressurized to accept extradition to Israel.
