ISRAEL DEMANDS THE BODY OF OMAR ZAYED NAYEF FROM BULGARIA
Israel demands that Omar Nayef Zayed's(1963-2016) body will be handed to it by Bulgaria.
Beyond the usual attempt to humiliate its Palestinian victims even in death, we can only assume that Israel wants to avoid an independent autopsy that could reveal truth about the death of the former political prisoner and member of PFLP.
Zayed, left alone and defenseless in Palestine's embassy in Sofia, which had no Palestinian guards and from which Bulgaria had withdrawn security claiming that all embassies in the capital were safe, was found dying in the premises of the embassy on the morning of February 26.
According to his family, Bulgarian authorities at first had told them that he had been badly beaten, but now Bulgaria claims that he died after a supposed fall from height - even when there isn't any great heights in the embassy area.
The implication Bulgaria, which is refusing to allow access to the autopsy report, tries to convey is one of 'suicide'. Considering that Palestinian authorities have been denied access to his autopsy, this seems to be standard and clumsy attempt to hide a political murder.
Bulgaria's Prime Minister Boyko Borisov, who visited Israel just few days before Zayed's death, is a former member of his country's communist-era security services - notorious for their use by Soviet Union to assassinate dissidents from the Soviet Bloc in the 'West'.
Zayed had phoned to his brother last time in the evening before his death and there had been no evidence of suicidal tendencies with his dealings with his family during his time in the embassy, only disappointment to the response given by the ambassador Ahmad al-Madhbouh, who allegedly had told him to leave the embassy and accept extradition to Israel, claiming that Mossad had access to the embassy.
Omar Zayed, who had lived in Bulgaria since 1993, had taken refuge in the embassy in December 2015 after Israel demanded his extradition and Bulgaria tried to arrest him and did arrest his son. Nayef, a pre-Oslo prisoner, was imprisoned by Israel in 1986 and escaped from prison after a hunger strike in 1990. In 1993 Israel agreed that it would release all pre- Oslo Agreement prisoners - yet thirty of them are imprisoned by it to the day.
It had been thought before his death that Israel used Zayed and compliant Bulgária, eager to impress the United States government, as a test case against Palestinian exiles and activists in European Union overall.
There is a perhaps far-fetched theory that Zayed was deliberately left unprotected in the embassy by Bulgaria and perhaps even Palestinian Authority representatives (Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki's role has been questioned by PFLP) to facilitate this in the manner of kidnapping of Dirar Abu Sisi from Ukraine in 2011, in which Ukrainian government likely helped Israel. Abu Sisi, an engineer from besieged Gaza, is still imprisoned by Israel.
Perhaps Zayed's death was a kidnapping done wrong, perhaps Israel intended to kill him all along - if it did so. Anyone jumping over a not-too high fence can access the embassy, where Zayed was left to face his last night alone. A last night, of which we can expect Bulgaria to offer as little light as possible.
Palestinian Authority's handling of his death, an investigation by committee with high level of secrecy and with only political members, has been faulted by PFLP and Zayed's family, which has drawn its support from it, demanding a new investigation by experts and a new autopsy by Palestinian pathologists.
In the current circumstances it can be expected that no matter findings of that investigation PA will not try to put much pressure on Bulgaria, European Union and Israel to find justice for Omar Nayef Zayed and his family.
